Overview

The subclass 500 lets international students live and study in Australia for the duration of an enrolled course, with limited work rights. The Genuine Student (GS) requirement is now the heart of the application.

Eligibility requirements

  • Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from a CRICOS provider
  • Meet the Genuine Student (GS) requirement
  • Evidence of financial capacity (living costs, tuition, travel)
  • English language evidence where required
  • OSHC health cover for the stay

Document checklist

  • CoE and academic transcripts
  • Financial documents (savings, income, sponsor support)
  • GS statement addressing course logic and circumstances
  • English test results (IELTS/PTE/TOEFL)
  • OSHC policy

Frequently asked questions

What is the Genuine Student requirement?

The GS requirement replaced the old GTE statement. It asks targeted questions about your study logic, ties to home, and how the course benefits your future — vague or template answers drive refusals.

Can I work on a student visa?

Yes — generally up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, and unlimited hours during scheduled course breaks.
