The Sponsored Parent Visa (subclass 870) is a temporary visa that allows parents of Australian citizens and permanent residents to stay in Australia for up to 3 or 5 years. Unlike permanent parent visas, it offers much faster processing and greater flexibility.

Key Features

  • Stay in Australia for 3 or 5 years per visa
  • Can be renewed once for another 5 years (total 10 years)
  • Faster processing than permanent parent visas
  • No balance of family test required

Requirements

For the Parent:

  • Be the biological, adoptive, or step-parent of the sponsor
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Meet health and character requirements
  • Have adequate health insurance

For the Sponsor (Child):

  • Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible NZ citizen
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have a taxable income of at least $83,454.80 (or combined with partner)
  • Meet character requirements

Limitations

  • Does not lead to permanent residency
  • No work rights
  • Must maintain adequate health insurance
  • Cannot apply for a further substantive visa while in Australia
