Sponsored Parent Visa 870: A Flexible Temporary Option

The Sponsored Parent Visa (subclass 870) is a temporary visa that allows parents of Australian citizens and permanent residents to stay in Australia for up to 3 or 5 years. Unlike permanent parent visas, it offers much faster processing and greater flexibility.
Key Features
- Stay in Australia for 3 or 5 years per visa
- Can be renewed once for another 5 years (total 10 years)
- Faster processing than permanent parent visas
- No balance of family test required
Requirements
For the Parent:
- Be the biological, adoptive, or step-parent of the sponsor
- Be at least 18 years old
- Meet health and character requirements
- Have adequate health insurance
For the Sponsor (Child):
- Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible NZ citizen
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have a taxable income of at least $83,454.80 (or combined with partner)
- Meet character requirements
Limitations
- Does not lead to permanent residency
- No work rights
- Must maintain adequate health insurance
- Cannot apply for a further substantive visa while in Australia
