The Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189) is one of the most sought-after Australian visas, offering permanent residency without requiring sponsorship from an employer, family member, or state/territory government.
How It Works
The subclass 189 is a points-tested visa. You must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect and be invited to apply. Points are awarded based on:
- Age (maximum 30 points for ages 25-32)
- English language proficiency (up to 20 points)
- Skilled employment experience (up to 20 points)
- Educational qualifications (up to 20 points)
- Other factors including partner skills, Australian study, and regional study
Eligibility Requirements
- Have an occupation on the relevant Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL)
- Obtain a suitable skills assessment for your occupation
- Be under 45 years of age when invited
- Score at least 65 points on the points test
- Have Competent English
- Meet health and character requirements
The Process
- Skills Assessment - Get your skills assessed by the relevant authority
- Expression of Interest - Submit an EOI through SkillSelect
- Invitation - Wait for an invitation to apply (issued periodically)
- Visa Application - Lodge your application within 60 days of invitation
